Schoolchildren in the province claim more space for pedestrians in their municipalities

The initiative reviews the design of cities and towns through children’s eyes and advocates the recovery of spaces for pedestrians and the reconfiguration of cities tailored to people. The project has so far reached more than 2,000 children in Galicia -in 2019 it made the leap to Brazil- and is being developed with the support of A Coruña Council, which yesterday presented the second phase by the provincial head of culture, Xurxo Couto, and the program director. Couto praised the intention of the project to promote that urban space stops being hostile to humanize itself. From the region of A Coruña, children from Arteixo have participated and a workshop was planned in Cambre every afternoon this summer, but it has been cancelled by Covid-19, as well as many other planned activities. The pandemic, González pointed out, has made it possible to see more clearly the importance of living in cities with enough spaces to walk and stroll.

The workshop proposes the temporary transformation of various public spaces in Arteixo.

Sandra González, who is, along with her PØSTarquitectos team, one of those in charge of putting it into operation, says that one of the goals of this activity is to generate identity among the little ones. In the workshop, children explain their vision of the municipality and draw the most outstanding elements for them: the Burger King, the sports centre, a supermarket and the park, according to González. They also propose how the locality should be.”

But not only that project bears her signature in the Spanish virtual and physical pavilion.

Finishing their degree in the midst of a crisis led these professionals to investigate and train, for which they tried to find out what the cities of the future will be like, but from a perspective that is far from technique, since they use the vision that children have of the towns in which they live.”
