Carballeda de Avia Through the Frame

“Carballeda is very beautiful, but it used to be more beautiful up in the old village, which was the original Carballeda. This is the new one, but the old one was more beautiful.”

“I was born here in Carballeda and I would like to die in Carballeda, because I love the village.”

“The village is very run-down. Very neglected.”

“We have changed a lot, because before, when you went to the vineyards, you would meet everyone in the village along the way. Now, if you meet someone on the road, it’s unusual, because no one works the land anymore.”

“Rianxo is a lovely, peaceful village… for me, it’s the best”

“This square is the square of all squares (…) I think it means a great deal to me and to all of us who live here”

“One of the places I like best is undoubtedly Tanxil and Tronco beach, the pier and perhaps Cambo de Arriba. (…) The coastal villages all have a unique charm; we have everything – we have the hills, we have the sea, we have a maritime culture… and then there’s another very important aspect, which is that it’s a village of distinguished writers”

“As for where to spend time, what I like best is by the sea; I like Tanxil, the beach at the pazo, Taragoña beach, Las Cunchas – I like all the beaches in Rianxo”

“For me, it’s one of the prettiest squares in Rianxo; I like the whole of Rianxo, but this square is special”

“We used to play in this square when we were children (…) in the summer there are lots of concerts here, the Holy Week procession… because this square is a very traditional, very welcoming place”

“We mustn’t lose our memory; a country without a past is a country without a future”

“I like this square because it has its own charm (…) I spent many hours here as a child, sitting on this stone cross with my friends, chatting and watching the day go by

“I used to play here a lot when I was little because there were no cars”

“Rianxo is a lovely coastal area”

“Rianxo is a lovely, very peaceful village with beautiful scenery and stunning beaches”

“For me, Rianxo is the best village”

“This square is interesting because on the day of the Feirón we have performances here by the dance groups from Rianxo (…) it’s always worth popping round to have a look. Down there we sing *O Paxaro Pinto* and then they come here to dance”

“‘When we were little, there were concerts, there were parties, there were loads of people out and about; to be honest, there were lots of children and young people in the streets, but there are fewer today

“We are here in the Church Square, now known as Dieste Square. In front of us are some restored houses where a Late Medieval cemetery has been discovered (…), we have the Pazo do Martelo (…) and we are very close to the houses of Dieste and Manuel Antonio, where the Castelao family once lived (…) Rianxo has a rich history”

“The Bar A Motora takes its name from a motorboat that used to run to Vilagarcía, as the Catoira bridge didn’t exist back then. We used to travel by boat to Vilagarcía, and it was called ‘la motora’”

“I love everything about Rianxo; I love that it’s like a village – we all know each other; it’s a really lovely and welcoming town”

“I’d like to see the music, dancing and everything else that the young people here are so involved in carried on”

“To the younger generations, I’d say get involved and do what the older generations used to do; ask your parents, interview older people so that things continue to be done as they were in the past”

“The Virgin of Guadalupe was brought here by a sailor from Argentina, because there used to be no Guadalupe here at all”

“I used to play here a lot when I was little (…) we used to play “la estornela”, marbles, “los pinchos” and “los cartones”…”

“What I like most about this square is the atmosphere, the peace and quiet, how lovely it is, listening to the birds; it’s really lovely here”

“I like everything about the village, because it’s a very peaceful, lovely place with lovely people”

“I’d like Galician traditions – the dances, the songs – to never be lost…”

“Nowadays, the younger generations have plenty of opportunities to learn thanks to secondary school, because years ago, when I had my children, they had to go to Ribeira or Padrón to do their A-levels, whereas now you can do them right here, in your own town”

“Rianxo is beautiful: our estuary, the opposite bank… When I wake up in the morning and see the sun reflecting off the opposite bank, it’s like a postcard. The sea doesn’t look like the sea; it looks like a mirror”

“The most important thing about Rianxo is Castelao – there’s no doubt about that (…) all of Castelao’s work is excellent”

“I like the Alameda, Castelao Square and then the whole seafront promenade and the old town of Rianxo. The little square is perhaps the prettiest part of Rianxo; you know there are the sailors’ houses there, which are among the few remaining – or among the best-preserved – in Galicia”

“I really like this part of the park, and especially the harbour, which has lovely views”

“I’d like to see sailors never disappear, and for young people to take to the sea just as their elders did in the past. We’re losing our connection to the sea here in Rianxo (…) It used to be a very small village; the sea came right up to here, right up to the houses, and there were no engines: they sailed, rowed, fished using the ‘xeito’ method… and the village began to flourish again thanks to that”
