CEIP Castelao students depict Rianxo on a giant game board.

The project The Town of Tomorrow returned to Rianxo this Wednesday so that students from CEIP Castelao could portray their local surroundings. Architect Sandra González, who spearheaded the initiative, asked them to draw the elements that shape the town’s identity. “Seventy percent of the drawings were of the Picariños candy shop,” she says with a laugh.

The O Porriño Town Council has launched “A Vila do Mañá” (“The Town of Tomorrow”), an innovative educational, cultural, and urban initiative that aims to empower the municipality’s children and adolescents to become active participants in shaping their town. Supported by the Spanish Ministry of Culture, the project uses local heritage and architecture as tools for imagining new ways of inhabiting and engaging with public spaces.
